Taiwan Native Plants
Conifer; Softwood
Conifers are mostly evergreen trees growing in temperate zones. They have needle-like, strip, or scale-like leaves. The structure of the wood fibers is generally soft, so it is also known as softwood. Coniferous plants are mainly composed of the Pinaceae, Taxodiaceae and Cupressaceae families. They are the most important materials for wooden structures in wood-building construction. From their cell composition, it is evident that coniferous trees have no vessels and clear annual rings, which can often be distinguished from the broad-leaved trees.
Vertical tracheids make up more than 90% of coniferous tree fibers. The fiber length of the conifer is longer than that of broad-leaved trees. Therefore, high-quality and high-strength papermaking fibers are mostly made of coniferous wood. Generally, Pinaceae wood has the aroma of resin, and Cupressaceae wood has the aroma of essential oil.
Five Conifers of Taiwan

Taiwania / Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayata
Second-grade coniferous wood, also known as Asian cypress. The wood is rich in color, has a straight texture, a smooth surface but lacks luster and has low shrinkage rate. It is easily processed and painted, which makes it a good material for use in construction and for furniture, doors, windows, and ships, etc.

It is often used in temples or other building materials for beams, columns, roofs, furniture, doors and windows, and shipbuilding materials, etc.

Taiwan cypress / Chamaecyparis obtusa
First-grade coniferous wood of precious species, also known as yellow cypress, the thick-shell, Hinoki, and Siông-ngôo. It is similar in texture and consistency to the Taiwan red cypress, but has a stronger aroma with a hint of spiciness. Its heartwood contains richer oils than that of red cypress and therefore has a better corrosion resistance and insect-proof effect. It is often used in temples or as building materials for beams, columns, roofs, furniture, doors and windows, and shipbuilding materials, etc.

Luanta fir / Cunninghamia konishii
First-grade coniferous wood. The wood is rich in oils and has a strong aromatic smell. The heartwood has strong corrosion resistance and is resistant to insects and ants.
